Hi,

Just wondered if it was possible to get a static IP address for my broadband account?

For when I work from home and need to access our system I have to manually log in via a terminal and then add my current dynamic IP to the firewall.

No is the simple answer! BT will tell you that if you want a Static IP Address you will need to get business Connection. If it's for your home then your not a business, so you can't have one.

I now use a service from http://www.dydns.com whenever my IP address changes, my computer will automatically update the DYDns server as to the change. I have a user account of;

username.gotdns.com

I can access my computer from anywhere at anytime :-)

Talking to BT Bombay is a waste of time.

Spot on Thomas... I use dyndns.com aswell... Although I gave up trusting the DNS bit on the Homehub as it was too slow to update. Better off using another dns client to keep tabs on any changes etc.

I have been running mine on my Mac for the last 3 years :-) Software client hasn't let me down, great for checking security cams whilst away too :-)

Get a Netgear Router, far superior to BT's Home Hub!!

Hi,

Thanks for the replies, I currently use the DynDNS in the hub which works great.

However I was needing a static IP address so that we can add it to our works firewall. We could create a script to periodically dig the dns name and alter the firewall rules, but thats relying on a 3rd party to control the firewall which just aint gonna happen.

Oh well! will have to think of another solution.

David,

Set yourself up a free account with dyndns add a host name ie david.homeip.net, you then need to configure the HH dns page to the same user name and password for your dns account and forward that port to the PC you wish to be open to the outside via that dns name, for me I had to open up the remote desktop post as well and it works very well.

Note. When i did this on an older BT adsl router it always showed the router login page when checked from within you own network which was a pain, not sure if that is the same with the HH.

Happy porting !

Many thanks for the tip, just what I was also looking for

Just to add that within the HomeHub click on Advanced settings / Configuration / Dynamic DNS and you can enter the DynDNS details, it also knows about statdns, custom, no-ip, dtdns, and gnudip

wicked! never knew all those existed... thanks again!

You can get Business broadband in your home if you like. If you really need a static IP that's your best bet.

Hello there!

I am set up on DynDNS but not quite sure about setting up on a Belkin G+ modem router. I see the screen where to enter the DynDNS info but a bit confused about the IP address.

Please assist!

Does using DynDNS or similar still mean you are identifiable as having a BT IP address? For example what happens if you visit a site like http://planetjamie.co.uk/ while using DynDNS (one of a growing number of sites which are now blocking BT customers completely from accessing their sites)
